Great Hammerhead Shark

Welcome to my blog, all about the great hammerhead shark whose scientific name is Sphyrna Mokarran. Great Hammerheads are the biggest of all nine hammerhead types. They weigh in at about 500 pounds and are 13.1 ft, but the largest hammerhead was 20ft, with it weighing in at 991 pounds. There are approximately around only 200 of these gorgeous sharks left in the world.

Great Hammerhead Sharks migrate long distances, around 756 miles. These Great Hammerhead Sharks can be found on both the eastern and western shores of Africa, Australia, Western Europe, North America, and Japan.

The Great Hammerhead Shark has a huge role in the ecosystem! By eating the animals that are below them in the food chain, they ensure that the diversity of species is in balance with competitors!
Sadly these sharks are targeted because of their fins and how large they are. They are targeted by overfishing, where their fins are used for shark fin soup. More than 90% of these sharks die once they are caught.

These are beautiful sharks, and that is why people really need to care about their numbers drastically declining. If these sharks were to go extinct, then their role in the ecosystem would go away. The food chain would get unbalanced.

There are many conservation efforts going on. People are trying to get shark fin soup illegal. The only countries where you cannot have shark fin soup are in the European Union, the United States, and Australia. There is also a bracelet company called Fahlo, where the money you spend on a bracelet goes towards conservation for these animals to protect them. I have all of the bracelets, and my shark bracelet is actually a great hammerhead shark named Eddie

With the help of geographical factors, awareness can be spread, and it can show just how their numbers are decreasing. It can also show areas where Great Hammerheads are targeted the most, and these areas can change the way they view these creatures.

These sharks really need our help. Their numbers are decreasing so fast that these amazing sharks may face extinction. By helping them, their numbers can go back up, and they can get out of the scary world of being endangered.

Here are five ways you can help!
1.) Donate Today
2.) Support policy changes toward the oceans
3.) Symbolically adopt an animal (like I have)
4.) Help teach others about taking care of the oceans
5.) Make shark fin soup illegal
